Civil War Veteran
John, a laborer, enlisted at Fitchburg, age 36, in Company F, Massachusetts 57th Infantry Regiment on 18 Feb 1864.
He was promoted to Corporal on 01 May 1865 and mustered out on 30 Jul 1865 at Delaney House, Washington, DC.
His death record reports that he was "killed by cars."
From the "Springfield Republican," 14 Jan 1873:
"John Burke, a blacksmith employed in the repair shop of the Boston, Clinton and Fitchburg railroad, at Fitchburg, fell beneath the wheels of a moving train, Sunday evening, and was so injured that he died in a few minutes.
He leaves a wife and five children."
