Abigail Olivencia, 81, of Sunnyside, the matriarch of four generations who was devoted to her family and her faith, died Monday at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.
The former Abigail Burgos was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, and was brought to Manhattan as a teenager. She lived there and in The Bronx before moving to Sunnyside nine years ago and entered Sea View Hospital Home and Rehabilitation Center last year.
Mrs. Olivencia was a member of International Christian Center, Graniteville. Before moving to the Island, she was a member of La Sinagoga Pentecostal Church in Manhattan for forty years.
Mrs. Olivencia was renowned for her cooking and her generosity. Her home was open to anyone in need of shelter or encouragement, her family said.
"She loved the Lord, and she taught us that no matter what life brought you, God would always guide you," said her daughter, Daisy Olivencia Gregg.
Mrs. Olivencia's daughter, Elizabeth Olivencia, died in 1964.
Surviving, along with her daughter, Daisy, are her sons, Leandro, David, and Ruben; her daughters, Rebecca Ortiz and Deborah Olivencia; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
The funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the International Christian Center.
Arrangements, including cremation, are being handled by the Stradford Funeral Home, Concord.
