Awana, Wilma Louise

Visitation for Wilma Louise Awana, 81, will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Union Cemetery on Monday morning, June 16, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Wilma was born in Lincoln, KS to Bill and Violet Burgin, the second of three children. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis Awana; her parents and her sister, Anna May. The Burgin children, Anna May, Wilma and Billy came to California from Kansas in the 1940's, after the death of their mother Violet. She graduated from Beauty College, but was unable to continue as a beautician when she realized that she was colorblind, and therefore couldn't dye hair properly. After her stint as a beautician, Wilma worked in the coffee shop at the old Lebec Hotel as a waitress. Wilma's favorite memory of her life was the day she met Francis. He ordered rye toast (specifically run through the toaster twice). After she served him wheat toast run through two times (burnt), he walked behind the counter of the coffee shop and taught her what rye bread was. A friendship bloomed from there and they were married in 1955. Francis adopted Wilma's daughters, Cheryl and Debra, in 1957. Wilma often said that Francis was the only father that her girls would ever need to know. Wilma started work as a school secretary at the El Tejon School District in 1958 and she ended her career at Frazier Park school, retiring in June of 1985. Wilma also bred and raised Silky Terriers that she showed in AKC Conformation and Obedience Events. Her Silky's meant the world to her as well as all the people she met with the same interest. She enjoyed going to dog shows well after she quit breeding just to watch others dogs being shown and talking to everyone. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Walters and Debra Miller; grandsons, Jon Houser and Kevin Miller; granddaughter, Kellie Miller; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Burgin and many other friends that she considered family. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the Alzheimer's Association 225 North Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601-7633 or www.alz.org.
