Afton Devey Burgess
1920 - 2016

Early Life: Afton was born on October 21, 1920, in Alpine, Utah, to Earl Marsh and Velma Grace Strong Devey. Afton grew up on a farm but never considered herself a farm girl. In her words, "I didn't like getting dirty or being out in the hot sun. I preferred helping Mom in the house". Being the oldest girl in a family of six children, she became the family "baby tender". Because of her cheerful outlook she got the nickname of "Happy" which was later shortened to "Hap". Her siblings called her that all of her life including 10 minutes before she passed away.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Following graduation from American Fork High School in 1938, Afton attended Brigham Young University. She graduated in 1941 with a teaching degree. She married George Dale Burgess on December 29, 1943, in the Salt Lake Temple. She loved learning and returned to BYU to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962. Afton taught elementary school in Alpine School District for 24 years and touched the lives of many students with her ability to use positive praise to encourage students to reach their full potential. Afton served faithfully in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and Dale had many adventures together with friends and family, but their greatest joy was in serving an 18 month full-time mission to Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1984 to 1985. They also enjoyed traveling throughout the world; in their later years, they made lasting friendships traveling and camping with the Squaw Peak Sam's Chapter of the Good Sam Club. Afton Devey Burgess, of Lehi, Utah, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25, 2016. She was 95 years old.
