Walter Burgess was the son of Richard L. Burgess (1867-1931) (son of Wiley W. & Martha (Cross) Burgess) and Polly Ann (Chapman) Burgess (1868-1926.)

In the 1900 U. S. Census Walter lived with his parents and siblings in Colquitt County, Georgia. In the 1910 Census he was not with his family, but may have been living in Ben Hill County, Georgia, working as a hired hand for the Zary Azer Dorminy family.
In 1917 when he registered for the draft Walter was single and living in Bradford County, Florida, where he worked as a guard at Raiford Prison. The 1920 U. S. Census shows him married to Blanche A. Burgess (b. ca. 1892 in Massachusetts;) the young couple lived in Colquitt County, Georgia, with Walter's parents and siblings.
Walter died at age 26 from a "tumor" that had been diagnosed one year earlier. He had been attended by Dr. G. H. Folsom for two months prior to his death. Walter's occupation was that of "soldier, private."
