Edmond J. Burgess, retired Chief of Detectives and former acting Chief of the Hingham Police Dept. passed away on Tuesday Oct. 25, 2011 at his home in Weymouth. He was 80 years of age. Born in Boston, Ed was a 1948 graduate of Weymouth Trade School. He served 9 active duty years in the US Navy which included service during the Korean War and also served 26 years in the Naval Reserves before retiring in 1986 as chief at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Ed served on the Hingham Police Dept. for 30 years before retiring in 1992. He and his wife Mary then moved to the Villages in FL where he became the Director of Security from 1993 thru 1998. He was one of the founding fathers of the Southeastern Detective Assoc. and had also worked security at Spruce Creek until 2010. Ed was a member of numerous professional police and veterans organizations as well as the Weymouth Elks and the Ostomy Assoc. as a cancer survivor. Beloved husband of 36 years to Mary F. (Morani) Burgess-Casey. Devoted father of Edmond J. Burgess Jr of Pembroke, Kathleen Davis of Halifax, Sandra Williams of Rockland, Karen Scarry of Hingham, Nancy Garcia and Sheila Michel both of AZ, Mary Frances Regan of Scituate, John Casey of SC and Renee Jeanne Mahoney of Marshfield. Brother of Leonard Burgess of Danvers. Also survived by many grand and great-grandchildren. Funeral from the McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth, at 809 Main St. (Rte 18 opp. South Shore Hospital), Friday at 7:45 a.m. Funeral Mass to follow in St. Helens Church, Rte. 53, Norwell, at 9 a.m. and burial in the Washington St. Cemetery, Norwell.
