Mr. Clarence J. "Bucky" Burgess, of Maynard, formerly of Waltham, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at his home. He was 82.
Born in Wellesley, a son of the late Anthony and Gladys (Cormier) Burgess, Bucky attended Waltham High School in Waltham and had been a Waltham resident for more than 50 years. Before moving to Maynard ten years ago, he had been a Mashpee resident for ten years.
During World War II, he served with the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Wasp CV-18. After the war, Bucky owned and operated C.J. Burgess Plastering in Waltham for forty years. After that, he worked as a custodian for ten years at Waltham City Hall before retiring in 1986. In 2000, he was awarded, with other veterans, his high school diploma during a Waltham Veterans Day ceremony held to honor the young men who'd left school early to serve in the military during the war.
Bucky was a member of the Holy Name Society at Saint Brigid's Church in Maynard and before that had been a longtime member and past president of the same organization at Saint Mary's Church in Waltham. He was a 52 year member of the Gov. David I. Walsh Assembly, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He also had been a member of the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham, the Disabled American Veterans in Waltham and the Maynard Country Club.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary L. (Brown) Burgess; his children, Thomas A. Burgess and his wife, Judith, of Waltham, David A. Burgess and his wife, Kathleen, of Plymouth, Stephen A. Burgess and his wife, Jenay, of Hyannis and Janet E. Cardarelli and her husband, Leo, of Waltham; one brother, Roger Burgess and his wife, Rose, of Maynard; one sister, Doris Brown and her husband, Thomas, of West Yarmouth; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Bucky was also the father of the late Mary Lou Burgess.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25th from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
Visiting hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
