|Birth: ||Mar. 22, 1933|
|Death: ||Dec. 4, 2009|
Van returned to his Heavenly Home on Friday morning, December 4, 2009.
Born a native of Alpine, Utah on March 22, 1933, the son of Edward "W" and Inez Thurza Clark Burgess.
He grew up on a farm and learned early the meaning of hard work. He was the first Eagle Scout in Alpine at age 15 having earned the swimming merit badge in the family pool built by Van and his father. He attended school at Alpine Elementary and American Fork High School. While he was the center on the American Fork basketball team of 1950, they won the State Championship.
Van and JoAnn Chadwick were high school sweethearts. She cheered him on at every game in both high school and college. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 12, 1953. They have four children: Jolene (Kenneth) Wilson, Vanee' Ashby, Jewel (Clive) Walters and Clark (Nora) Burgess. All four children are married in the temple, and have graduated from college, which makes Van an extremely proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Van is honored because of his contribution to Horticulture in Utah. He retired after 31 years of services to the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. His ability to get along with people is his greatest asset. He is happy and you will always see him smiling. He says he is happiest working the ground and watching his orchards produce beautiful apples and peaches.
Van's life has been spent in service to others. He served as Bishop of the Alpine Fifth Ward, President Burgess to missionaries at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, and Mayor for Alpine City. He served as president of the Utah County Water Conservancy District. His foresight has served him in making sound decisions for our community.
Van and JoAnn are always together. Their example of love makes the word family an example for the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
