Former Elkhart Township Pioneer Dies
Nelson Burgess, eldest son of Orrin and Sarah Burgess was born in Wayne County, Indiana, 29 Dec 1837, died in Des Moines, IA,. 3 Aug 1917 aged 79 yrs., 7 mos., and 5 days. On Dec 21, 1862 he was married to Sarah V. Powers who survives him.
To this union three children, only one of who survives W. E. Burgess of Des Moines, one grandson, one brother, three sisters with many other relatives and hosts of friends honor his memory. He moved to Dallas County, Iowa in 1872 and to Polk County in 1874 where he lived for over thirty years on the same homestead, removing to Des Moines almost six years ago that he might be near his son.
He was a soldier of the Cross having confessed faith in Christ in 1877 and being faithful to him for forty years until called to enter the fuller and higher life of heaven. He was a charter member of the White Oak U. B. Church and diligent in the interest of the same until advancing age and ill health forbid.
In the years of his decline he was often seen reading scriptures and shortly before death claimed him referred to the passage, "Be Yea Ready." His steadfast life and his patience during his last weeks of suffering are evidence that he was ready to meet his Lord even though he came suddenly.
