John I. Burgess was born to John P. Burgess and his wife, Clara. John I.'s family moved from Gwinnett Co., GA circa 1838 to Benton Co., AL (now Cleburne Co.). In 1851, John I. married Nancy Ann Kemp. They had three children born during their marriage:

Odelia Jane , b. 1854; d. 1894
Willis Anthony, b. 1855; d. 1856
Eliza Belzora Margaret Jane, b. 1858

Due to John I.'s desire to have a male heir, he negotiated with his daughter, Odelia, and her husband, Dack Pounds, to adopt their first born, John William Lafayette Pounds, in 1873. John Will subsequently divided his childhood between his parents and grandparaents' homes.

Nancy died of typhoid fever in 1894 and the following year, John I. married Bettie Stamps. They had no children from their marriage. Bettie later married her first husband's grandson and adopted son, John William Lafayette Pounds, and they had one daughter, Lenora Aline.

John I. was a Mason and also was a founder and trustee of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
