John M. Burd was born Novtmber (sic) 26, 1850, in Perry county (sic), Pennsylvania, and passed away on the morning of his 85th birthday at Martin, South Dakota.
He grew to manhood in Pennsylvania and came west to Iowa in the spring of 1871, where he taught school. He was married to Edith Spence on November 30, 1873. They moved by wagon to Nuckolls county (sic), Nebraska, in 1877, being a pioneer in the true sense of the word, living in a dugout until a better house could be built.
He freighted from Sutton and Edgar, and taught school for several years to help out the small income at that time. He served five years as clerk of the district court of Nuckolls county (sic).
In 1911 he bought a general merchandise stock at Nora and was post master there for eight years. In 1919 he sold his holdings in Nuckolls county (sic) and moved to Chadron, Nebraska, and later to Martin, So. Dak.
He leaves to mourn his passing, four children: Bert of Norton, Kansas, J. Alonzo of Nelson, Mrs. C.E. Chamberlain of Chadron, Nebraska; and Cecil of Martin, So. Dak. Also sixteen grand children, eleven great grand children, two brothers, Noah of Angus and B.H. of Nelson. His wife preceded him in June of this year.
He was always interested in the welfare of the community in which he lived giving of his time wherever needed.
The remains were brought to Nelson and the funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church (sic) Friday afternoon at 1:30 by the pastor, Rev. John Caldwell. Interment was made in Nelson cemetery (sic).
