POQUOSON - Joseph K. Bunting, 66, died Sept. 29, 1998. He was a native, lifelong resident, and, for several years, mayor of Poquoson.

"Joe" graduated from Poquoson High School, which his father, the late Sellie T. Bunting, helped to build. He then briefly attended college at VPI. A thyroid cancer forced him out of college, and eventually he began a successful 26-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.

Over the years, Joe held many titles relative to his position on the job and in the community. These included: draftsman, supervisor, superintendent, coach, teacher, mayor, School Board member and vice president at the Hampton Roads office of John J. McMullen and Associates that he started after leaving the shipyard in 1977.

Those closest to him know that the titles most meaningful to him and to them are: "Bubba," Joe, Dad, and Pop-Pop. His mother, Viola Evans Bunting, survives him and is responsible for instilling the values these titles demanded and to which his grandchildren, Brian, Joey, Jerry, Michael, Steven, Patrick, Jeffrey, Evan, Erin and Daniel are benefactors.

He is also survived by his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Evans Bunting; a daughter, Regina B. Wescott of Poquoson; sons, Brent Bunting, and his wife, Lynne, of Hampton; Douglas Scott Bunting, and his wife, Debbie, of Poquoson, Garry K. Bunting, and his wife, Susan, of Gloucester; brothers, Jerry E. Bunting, and his wife, Melvin, of Hubert, N.C., Jackie O. Bunting, and his wife, Jane, of Littleton, Colo.; brother-in-law, W. Donald Evans, and his wife, Nancy, of Newport News; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family along with many loving, caring friends and former coworkers.

Joe contracted cancer again in 1994 and the prognosis was never good. An undefeatable attitude and a closer walk with God kept the disease at bay as he continued to teach all who knew him a few more lessons of life. Death be not proud!

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home and at other times at 30 Bunting Lane. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, by the Rev. W. Michael Nobles Sr. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity UMC Building Fund, American Cancer Society, or Poquoson Rescue Squad.
