Excerpt from the Elk Point Leader, July 9, 1896, page 5, column 3:

"Our community was startled Sunday afternoon by the announcement that Mrs. Solomon Allen, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Union County, was dead. The news of Mrs. Allen's death was entirely unexpected as she had been in the city to witness the Fourth of July celebration on Saturday and was apparently in the best of health. But shortly after returning to her home two miles east of Elk Point, she was stricken with apoplexy and died at 11:45 Sunday forenoon.

Mrs. Allen came to this county with her husband on October 6, 1867, and settled on the homestead where she lived at the time of her death, She was born in Orr, Orleans County, New York, on June 22, 1822, and at the time of her death was 74 years old. As a result of the union seven children were born, four of whom are still living - Ethan, in Oklahoma; Willard, Solomon and Amanda in this county. Deceased's husband died on February 2, 1888, at the age of 72 years.

The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Allen were held Monday from the M.E. Church, being largely attended by sympathizing friends.

THE LEADER extends the sympathy of the community to the bereaved family."

Another article from the same newspaper and date:

"DIED. ALLEN - Mrs. Lydia Allen died July 5, 1896 at her home in Elk Point Township, aged 74 years and 13 days. Funeral services conducted Monday, July 6, 1896 from M.E. Church in Elk Point.
"Lydia Allen is dead." These were the words that caused sorrow in many hearts, and cast a gloom over many households. Dead? No, it cannot be. It is a mistake. She passed from this earth - from our sight - but Lydia Allen still lives - and will live in the memory of those who knew her, while in the realms above her soul will live on forever.
Yes, she has left us. A noble woman has crossed the river and gone to wear a starry crown with the angels in heaven. We mourn for her, yet we mourn not without hope, and trust in the promises of a hereafter.
During her life the deceased was an inspiration to her associates by her industry and enthusiasm, and until her last few years, was capable of accomplishing more than her share of the duties of life. This was characteristic of her throughout the entire period of her existence. She was a good business woman, a good manager, and by her honesty, integrity and kind and generous heart made everlasting friends of all, with whom her lot was cast.
By the premature discharge of a cannon at Penalton, NY, July 4, 1850, her husband was permanently deprived of sight, and Mrs. Allen was left with a large family of children to educate and support. This she successfully accomplished, by her industry and perseverance, and her deeds, through the living examples plainly illustrate the sacrifices of a great and worthy woman.
The beginning of her life takes us back to June 22, 1822 when in Orleans, Orr Township, NY, she first saw the light of day. May 5, 1838, at the age of 16, she was married to Solomon Allen of Washington County. NY and during all the subsequent years of her life she remained loyal to her first chosen companion and will be remembered as a good woman, a faithful wife and a kind and indulgent mother. As a result of her union with Solomon Allen, 7 children were born into the world, 4 of whom are left to mourn her loss - Solomon, Willard, Ethan and Mandy, who is now Mrs. William Ferguson - all residents of this county excepting Ethan, who lives in Oklahoma. The deceased children are Lucelia, Lucy and Willard, the funeral of the latter and the birth of the living Willard occurring at the same hour. With her husband, Mrs. Allen came to Wisconsin in 1851 where they were engaged in farming for 17 years. October 6, 1867 the family moved to SD settling on a homestead 2 miles south of Elk Point, where she lived until the day of her death. She was one of our earliest settlers, living here for nearly 30 years and built up her home amid the hardships and privations of those times- Indians, grasshoppers and drouth. She was well known to all the older residents of the county and there are very, very few who will not cherish to the end of their days the memory of Mrs. Allen. She has reached that ideal period which may be said to return the poetry of frontier life, and in comparison with which the pioneer time was the period of prose. We look back in deep sorrow upon the sad event which causes us to mourn the loss of one who was just finishing a life of so great usefulness when the cold hand of death was laid upon her. Truly hath the post said that:
'No frail man, however great, or high
can be concluded blest until he die.'
The mother and companion always lived a true Christian life and has gone to a just reward, where she joins her husband and 3 children who crossed the valley before her.
To the sorrowing relative and friends, the COURIER extends its heartfelt sympathy."
