The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) Arthur L. Bump, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 56th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, A.E.F., near Preny, France, 2 November 1918. While his regiment was being subjected to an intense enemy bombardment Colonel Bump visited every platoon in the front line and so encouraged and inspired his men by his bravery that they successfully met and repulsed every counterattack made upon them.
