Mrs. Helen Bumgarner Bell, age 93, of North Wilkesboro, widow of Edward Parker Bell died Monday, September 17, 2012 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

A private family graveside service will be held at Mountlawn Memorial Park. A public memorial service at First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro will be held later at a date to be announced.

Mrs. Bell was the only child of the late James Marshall and Emma Pennell Bumgarner of Wilkesboro. She was born December 20, 1918 in Wilkes County. Mrs. Bell graduated from Wilkesboro High School and was Valedictorian of the Class of 1935. She attended Woman's College (Now University of NC at Greensboro) and graduated in 1939 with a BS Degree in Secretarial Administration. She was elected to found the Commercial Department at Wilkesboro High School where she taught for two years. Following a position with the National Youth Administration in Greensboro, she accepted a job with the FBI in Charlotte.

On April 4, 1942, she married Edward P. Bell at Fort Bragg, NC. Following his graduation from Officer Candidate School, they moved to New York City, where she continued to work for the FBI. After returning to Wilkesboro, Mrs. Bell worked as a teller at Northwestern Bank and then taught business at North Wilkesboro High School. In the fall of 1948, she became Dean of Clevenger College of Business Administration and held this position for five and a half years.

Mrs. Bell was active in and held many positions in numerous organizations including the First United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, UNC-G Alumni Association, Wilkes Genealogical Society, Wilkes Art Gallery, two Extension Homemaker Clubs and was a charter member of the Wilkes General Hospital Auxiliary. She was also involved with the Apple Blossom Garden Club, the NC Symphony Society and the Triad Area Girl Scout Council.

In addition to her parents and husband, of 60 years, Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Frances.

Mrs. Bell is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Southwell and husband, Michael of Wilkesboro and Martha Ellen Cooley and husband, Brad of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Edward Michael Southwell and wife, Erin, Philip James Southwell and wife, Jennifer, James Edward Cooley, Jonathan Scott Cooley; two great grandchildren, Wyndham John Southwell and James Christian Southwell.
