Karen Marie Buls, age 51, of rural Sumner, Iowa, died October 1, 2012, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Karen was born on October 31, 1960, in Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Virgil and Margaret (Ganske) Schwake. She was raised in rural Sumner and later graduated from Tripoli High School in 1979. On August 22, 1981, Karen was united in marriage to Brent Buls at Spring Fountain Lutheran Church rural Sumner. The couple made their home in Calmar while Brent attended college. In 1982, the couple moved to Denver, Colorado where Karen worked at Wesley Energy Company and for Gorsuch, Kirgis, Campbell, Walker and Grover Law Firm. While in Colorado, Karen attended night classes at Regis College graduating in 1990, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Later that year the couple moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she worked for MCI as a production manager. During this time Karen attended night classes at St. Ambrose University in Davenport graduating with her M.B.A. in 1997. The couple returned to rural Sumner where Karen worked for a year at the University of Northern Iowa as Benefits Coordinator and then in 1999, for the Waverly Health Care Center as Director of Human Resources until her retirement in July of 2012.
Karen was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, Society of Human Resource Management, and Iowa Society of Healthcare Human Resources Association. Karen enjoyed fishing, bird watching, golfing, people, and motorcycling.
Karen's memory is honored by: her husband, Brent Buls, of Sumner; her parents, Virgil and Margaret Schwake, of Tripoli; two sisters, Judy (James) Shimon of Pocahontas and Jane (Doug) Koele of Reinbeck; a brother, James (Karla) Schwake of Sumner; her father and mother-in-law, Donald and Carol Buls of Tripoli; sisters-in-law, Julie Johnson of Waterloo, Melanie (Curt) Aalderks of Cedar Falls, and Rhonda (Kent) Davis of Tripoli; thirteen nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Frieda Ganske and Richard and Leta Schwake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4th, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli with Pastor Miles Renaas officiating. Burial will follow at the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Tripoli. Memorials may be directed to either Hope Lodge in Rochester, Minnesota or Cedar Valley Hospice
