He attended Yale University and left in his sophomore year to serve in the Connecticut Cavalry. He served in World War 1 in France. At the end of the war, he became a salesman for Richter and Co, and was a partner in Putnam & Co. from 1922 to 1943. From 1943 until his 1953 retirement, he was a partner in the stockbroker firm Cooley & Co.
He was prominent in Republican politics in Hartford and helped govern the borough of Fenwick, Old Saybrook. In his retirement, he researched antique furniture, including the work of Connecticut cabinet makers. He also served as a director of Cedar Hill Cemetery.
