Mildred was born January 21, 1925, the daughter of Ernest and Ella (Mundt) Buhr in Sumner, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Walter R. Brettmann on April 14, 1947 at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek near Sumner. The coupled lived in Waverly for 12 years until moving to an acreage near Bremer, where they made their home for 31 years. The couple moved back to Waverly in August of 1990. Walter passed away February 2, 2008.
Mildred was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Mildred enjoyed playing cards and listening to Polka music.
Mildred is survived by two sons, Gary Brettmann of Hopkins, Minnesota, Michael J. Brettmann and his wife, Catherine of Leavenworth, Kansas; five grandchildren, Benjamin Brettmann of Denver, Colorado, Marco Brettmann of Olympia, Washington, Alexander J. Brettmann of Djibouti, Connor W. Brettmann of Denver, Colorado, Jamie Brettmann of Leavenworth, Kansas; and one great grandson, Liam of Olympia, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, brothers, Ernest and Alfred Buhr, Sisters, Bertha Schwerin and Marilyn Kirchman.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly with Pastor Jon Hennings officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011, at the Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour preceding the service on Saturday.
