Death: Aug. 11, 2012

Helen Harris Buehler, October 22, 1920-August 11, 2012.
Helen Mary Harris was born to Roy V. and Edna Springer Harris in Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State with a B.S. in Dietetics and in 1942 married Hans Buehler. During the war, Helen worked as a dietician at Postgraduate Medical Hospital in New York City.
After the war, they moved to Knightstown, Indiana, where they raised three daughters. She earned her teaching certificate from Ball State Teachers College, Indiana, and taught Home Economics at a nearby high school in the mid-1960s.
In 1966, Hans was transferred with his company to Germany and subsequently to Whittier, California. When it was time to retire, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was the perfect choice since the Buehlers had been visiting there since 1957. Helen and Hans loved the Tetons and were proud to call Jackson home for more than 30 years.
Being a strong woman, giving back to the community was a way of life with Helen. Some of her volunteer accomplishments included being a Girl Scout Leader; Tri Kappa Sorority in Knightstown; President of League of Women Voters, fundraiser for American Cancer Society/Daffodil Days and St. John's Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Jackson.
Helen was a world traveler and always enjoyed an opportunity to learn from other people and cultures. She was an avid birdwatcher, a lover of nature and the West.
In July of 2012, after a seven-and-a-half-year battle with Alzheimer's, Helen returned to Jackson and at age 91, died peacefully within sight of her beloved Tetons.
Helen was predeceased by her husband in 1996. She is survived by her daughters, Jo Maltman (husband Alex) of Aberystwyth, Wales, Jan Buehler of Jackson, Wyoming, and Judy Buehler of Williamsburg, Virginia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alastair Maltman, Emily Maltman, Jason DeBoer, Devon Tubbs; a sister, Ruth Jenista, and a niece, Suzy Koch, both of Phoenix, Arizona.
Donations in honor of her life may be made to the Jackson Hole Land Trust, P.O. Box 2897, 555 East Broadway, Suite 228, Jackson, WY 83001 or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
