Joe Earl Buckner, Jr., age 66, of Greenville, died Thursday, February 19, 2009.

He was a native of Greenville and a son of the late Joe Earl Buckner, Sr. and Louise Byers Buckner.

He graduated from Greenville Senior High School in 1960. Joe was the center for the Greenville Red Raiders football team, where he was All State, received the Best Lineman Award and was on the Shrine Bowl team in 1959. He graduated from The Citadel in 1964. While at the Citadel, Joe was a member and captain of the football team, who were the 1960 Tangerine Bowl Champions, as well as the 1961 Southern Conference Champions. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a First Lieutenant from 1964-1966.

He held various positions in the textile industry, most notably as International Sales Manager for John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels, and C.E.O. of Bierrebi International Italian Cutting technologies. He served on the Board of the American Textile Machinery Association.
Mr. Buckner was a member of the Poinsett Club. He attended Overbrook Baptist Church.

He was a beloved and cherished husband, father and grandfather. Joe was a wonderful friend to those locally, as well as around the world. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family, especially his two beautiful little granddaughters, Chloe and Josie.

He is survived by his loving family, wife, Winnie Edmondson Buckner; son, Joe Earl Buckner, III; daughter and son-in-law, Allison Buckner Jones and John Jones; brothers, Charles Buckner and Jim Buckner; and granddaughters, Chloe Savannah Jones and Josie Victoria Irene Buckner.

The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary with services to follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dale Sutton officiating. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Citadel Foundation.
