Cpl. Edwin B. Buckland, Rt. 1, Escanaba, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for heroic achievement in military operations in Korea.
Buckland is a member of the 2nd Engineer Combat battalion of the Second division. He distinguished himself in the fighting near Wonju in January.
The citation read in part: "Corporal Buckland was a member of a demolition team whose mission was to destroy an enemy bridge. While members of the team were preparing the charges, he noticed hostile fire approaching the bridge, pinning down the team."
"Corporal Buckland immediately engaged the team with heavy and accurate sub-machinegun fire, relieving the pressure from his comrades who rallied and engaged the enemy in a fire-fight. His courageous actions enabled the team to continue its mission of destroying the bridge."

ESCANABA -- Edwin R. "Bob" Buckland, 63, of 6455 K.5 Road, Escanaba, died Monday, Aug. 23, at Woods Veterans Administration Medical Facility in Milwaukee.
He was born Aug. 19, 1930 in Escanaba, son of Edwin and Gladys (Sarasin) Buckland. He served in the Army from Sept. 5, 1947 to June 9, 1952 and he received a Bronze Star Medal, a Korean Service Medal with five bronze stars and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
He then served in the Air Force from Jan. 22, 1954 to July 8, 1960. Serving in the 2nd Engineer Combat Battilion of the 2nd Division. He received a Bronze Star medal with "V" device for heroic achievement in Korea.
Survivors include: his mother, Gladys Buckland of Escanaba; one brother, Vernon (Mary Lou) Buckland of Gladstone; one sister, Mrs. Hohn (Mary) Hovey of Wells; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Capt. Paul Smith from the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
