Frank stated that there was a mill out from the house in a cave with running water used to mill corn. His father operated this. Frank indicated the mill was gone before he was born. Frank helped fill in the cave in 1962 where the mill had been. He and his son, Donny, tore down the shed near the cave in 1962 also. This shed was used by Hansel as a blacksmith shop for many years. He could go into the blacksmith shop and make anything used on the farm or in the household out of wood or metal. Twyman has the last poker made by his father in the blacksmith shop. Frank indicated that Twyman was much like his father in that he would understand how things worked and how to repair them.
Frank also indicated that Hansel pulled all the children's teeth with a pair of forceps and also pulled teeth for the neighborhood children. The Dentist in Greensburg, Bart Hellem, gave Hansel the set of forceps and told him to pull the children's teeth and not to bring them to town. He pulled teeth for Clio and Beatrice Blankenship, Uncle Jim's daughters late one night after they had walked up the hill from their farm. Hansel quit pulling teeth after Alva was 7 or 8 years old. Alva was eating jam or sorghum and had a toothache. Leslie and John "P" had to hold Alva while Hansel pulled the tooth. It was a very difficult job and he never pulled another tooth after that.
"The younger children worked in the house and the only tool they used outside was the grubbing hoe and, therefore, they preferred to work in the house. They helped their mother wash clothes in the kettle in the front yard. Dora would start the fire at 4 AM to wash and would wash until 10 PM. She ironed every piece of wash the next day." --Frank Buchanan, 1997
Frank's hair was blond.
