Daughter of Clarbon Bryant, Sr. & Loma Bryant. Sister of Mable (Bryant) Harvey, Erma Esther (Bryant) Williams, Thelma (Bryant) Deary & Clarbon A. Bryant, Jr.. Wife of Waldress Alfred "W. A." James, Sr., [Married: August 1, 1950]. Mother of La Trelle Denise James, Waldress Alfred "Wally" James, Jr. & Kenneth Andre James.
At the age of 16 with a desire to be an educator, Gladys enrolled in Prairie View A & M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. Soon after marriage Gladys began her teaching career. She was hired by Edgewood Independent School District. Gladys taught junior high school until 1969 when she was named Vice Principal of Roosevelt Elementary.
In the early 1980´s, Gladys supported her husband´s decision to become an entrepreneur. Together they started La Trelle´s and in 1985 they opened their first retail location. Gladys lost W. A., with his passing, in 1989 after 38 years of marriage. Led by Gladys, still teaching, the family persevered and today the business has over 20 locations across Texas and as far away as Seattle, Washington.
