Charles A. Bryant died on December 1, 2010, at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, following a lengthy illness. He was a kind and gentle person and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Charlie was born to Randolph and June Bryant in Houston, Texas, on June 10, 1952. In 1964, he moved with his family to New Orleans and attended Isidore Newman School, where he graduated in 1970 and was a National Merit Scholar. He then attended Yale University and received a degree in mathematics in 1974. After receiving a master's degree in mathematics from New York University in 1976, he began working as an actuary for a life insurance company in New York City. After a few years there, he decided to become a lawyer and returned to New York University to enroll in its law school. Charlie received his law degree in 1984 and then worked as a project finance lawyer at large firms in New York City and Atlanta, Georgia. He had a competitive streak that he exhibited through academics and sports. During his high school years he played on the varsity tennis team. In college, he was coxswain of the Yale Crew team and received many dunkings following their victories. After he began his legal career, he learned to sail and was soon participating in races as well as pleasure cruises. Some of his fondest memories were of sailing on Long Island Sound or in the Caribbean. However, his passion was mathematics, and he enjoyed sharing this passion with others through teaching and tutoring. Charlie is survived by his companion of many years, Susan Rosenwasser, his brother Randy Bryant and wife Sandra, his nieces Emily Kramer, Amy Lee and Betsy Bryant, and his nephew Stephen Bryant. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point, Houston, Texas. Charlie will be buried at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Charlie's memory to the Yale Crew Association, P.O. Box 208216, New Haven, CT 06520-8216, Isidore Newman School, 1903 Jefferson Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115, or the American Liver Foundation, 39 Broadway, Suite 2700, New York, NY 10006.
