Joseph Alaric Bryant, Jr. September 6, 1918- August 17, 2005 CONYERS, GAŚ Joseph Alaric Bryant, Jr., of Conyers, GA, died Aug. 17, 2005. He was 86. He was born in Hopewell, VA, September 6, 1918 and was the son of the late Joseph Alaric Bryant, Sr., of Columbus, and the late Elva Cole Nichols of Miami, FL. Mr. Bryant was a former resident of Monroe and Columbus, and was a descendent of one of the original settlers of Columbus. He was educated at St. Joseph's Academy in Columbus and Columbus High School. He attended and graduated from the University of Georgia, class of 1942. He was a member of the freshman and varsity basketball teams during his collegiate career. Prior to his graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant, Army of the United States. He served in the Aleutian Islands and participated in the invasion of Kiska Island. His unit was the 2nd Battalion, 179 Infantry. The unit returned to Camp Chafee, AR, where it was deactivated. He was ordered to Italy and joined the 362nd Infantry, 91st Battalion. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry's Badge, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one star, and AENE Ribbon with three stars. His last assignment was to the 88th Infantry Division serving on the commanding General's staff as Assistant Special Service Officer. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services, Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Adams Bryant of Conyers; son, J. A. Bryant and daughter-in-law, Patience L. Bryant of Morgan City, LA; son, Charles P. Bryant and daughter-in-law, Bonny P. Bryant of Conyers; daughter, Teresa L. Bryant of Waynesville, NC; daughter-in-law, Suzanne L. Bryant of Alameda, CA; granddaughters, Jennifer Bryant of Davis, CA, Gwendolyn Bryant Cate of Boston, MA, Meredith L. Bryant of Atlanta, and Allyson Bryant Suriano of Wilmington, NC; grandsons, Alex Bryant of Waynesville, NC, and J. A. (Jay) Bryant IV of Morgan City, LA; four great granddaughters. He was predeceased by his cousins, Mary Margaret Byrne and Phillip Marion Byrne of Columbus. The remains will be cremated and the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon Saturday, August 20, 2005 at the funeral home.
