OBITUARY:
We have again been called upon to bear to the city of the dead, the form of one of our old residents, most respected and beloved. Mrs. Clarissa A. Barker, died at her home in Genoa Junction, on Friday last, at about eleven a.m. aged 70 years, 9 months, and 7 days. Her funeral services, conducted by Rev. F. J. Douglass, were held in the church on Sabbath morning, and attended by a full house. Her remains lie in our cemetery on the hill. Mrs. Barker was born Ocotber 4, 1808, at Durham County, New York. Her maiden name was Clarissa A. Brunson. She was one of a family of three brothers and three sisters, among whom she was second. Two brothers only survive her, one living in Michigan and one in Albany, NY. On April 7, 1825, she was married in Syracuse, NY to Mr. Hiram Barker - they lived three years in Christian Hollow, Onondaga Co, seven years in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co, three years at Lundy's Lane, the celebrated battle field in Canda; four years at Niagara Falls on the American side, and in 1843 moved onto their farm near the center of Bloomfield township, Walworth County, Wisconsin, where they continued to reside till the autumn of 1877, when they took up a residence in this village. Mrs. Barker has been the mother of eight children, vlz: two sons and six daughters, three of the latter having died in infancy, the remainder of her children still live, all in this vicinity, except one son who is in Kansas. She has been a woman of strong constitution and vigorous health and has done a vast amount of hard work. We, of a later generation, owe, these old pioneers more than we can realize, for what they have done to reclaim the country from its wilderness state and prepare it for our enjoyment. Mrs. Barker died in the triumph of a christian hope. She was converted to Christ in 1827, in Potsdam, NY in connection with a powerful revival of religion which is said to have extended over miles of country, and resulted in the conversion of over four hundred souls. She united at that time with the Methodist Episcopal Church, in connection with which denomination she held a church membership till she died. She ever honored her Christian profession. Her last days were full of great suffering but also full of unintermittent peace and assurance in Jesus Christ.
