Ruth (nee Pearce) Bruen, 83, formerly of Sherborn, MA, died Thursday, January 6, 2000, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham.
A resident of St. Patrick's Manor for the past 10 years, Mrs. Bruen was a resident of Sherburn for 30 years, and lived and summered for many years in Boothbay Harbor.
Born in Boston, she was a daughter of the late George H. and Marie L. (nee Duval) Pearce.
She was a graduate of Regis College in Weston, MA, Class of 1938, majoring in chemistry and mathematics. She received a Master's degree in education from Framingham State College in 1973.
Her teaching career included the Charles River School in Dover: the Framingham and Boston School systems.
A member of St. Theresa Parish in Sherburn, Mrs. Bruen was a former member of the parish choir and taught in the parish C.C.D. program for many years.
A watercolorist, twelve years ago she developed a talent for painting that has won her many honors and commissions, including a place in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's permanent art gallery. She had suffered from Muscular Dystrophy for 40 years. In 1999, she received the Massachusetts Personal Achievement Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Mrs. Bruen was an active member of the St. Patrick's Manor community and served as president of the Residents Council. She was also a member of the Brick House Gallery in Boothbay Harbor.
She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Bruen, and brother, John J. Pearce.
Survivors include three children, Christina M. Bruen of North Dartmouth, Margaret M. Baldridge of Kent, Washington, and RuthAnne M. of Cortland, New York; two brothers, the Most Rev. Archbishop George H. Pierce of Providence, RI, and Paul F. Pearce of Gladwyne, PA; two sisters, Dorothy M. Bruen of Centerville, VA, and Marie T. Higgins of Boothbay Harbor; and six grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held in the Chapel of St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham on Monday, January 10. Principal Celebrant was her brother, Archbishop George H. Pearce. Burial followed at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn.
