Elvira Bruce Alexander was born to the late Reverend Walter Bruce, Sr., and Georgia Bruce in Holmes County, Durant, Mississippi, on May 26, 1920. Twelve brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Liberty Hill A.M.E Zion Church. Elvira married Eddie Alexander and to this union three children were born; two daughters and a son. Upon moveing to the City of Durant, Mississippi, she joined Belmount Missionary Baptist Church, remaining faithful for more than sixty years.
Elvira graduated from Liberty Hill Rosenwald School, Holmes County Training School and from Ruse College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was a retired teacher of the Holmes County School District. During her teaching career she was employed at the following schools: Liberty Hill Rosenwald, Big Egypt Elementary School, Tchula Elementary School, Tchula Attendance Center and S. V. Marshall (formerly Tchula Attendance Center.)
She is widely known throughout the county for her melodious contralto voice. Elvira enjoyed gospel music and was delighted in singing wherever and whenever she was called upon. Mrs. Alexander was a longtime member of the Westwing Singing Convention. She served faithfully for many years as president of the church choir. She also served as Assistant Secretary of the church. Elvira served on the Hospitality Committee at the Church and provided delicious meals for guests and members.
Mrs. Alexander was a generous kind hearted individual who cared and was willing to share with others. She was responsible for the rearing of several of her grandchildren and provided for four grandchildren to receive a college education. Lolita, a granddaughter received her Master's degree from Mississippi State University.
Through her hard work and cooperative spirit, the church piano was dedicated in her honor in a ceremony on March 30, 2003, by her pastor; the late Reverend Jerome Kelly. Her motto for life was, "May the Work I've Done Speak for Me".
On Tuesday, April 6, 20115, Elvira went to her eternal rest, leaving to mourn her passing; two daughters, Ruby Lee Lucious (Roscoe) of Jackson, MS; Mary Ellen Wallace (John) of Gary, IN; one son, Joshua Alexander (Katie) of ROckford, IL; two brother, Walter and Nathan Bruce of Durant, MS; one sister, Virginia Jenkins of Joliet, IL; fourteen grandchildren, thrity-seven great-grandchildren, three great, great-grandchildren, an adopted daughte,r Mrs. Mildred Kelly; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers were: J. W. Bruce, Walter Bruce, John C. Johnson, Nathan Bruce, Joshua Alexander, Roscoe Lucious and John Wallace.
Active Pallbearers were: Eddie Williams, Oscar Wash, Jasper Bruce, James Williams, Kerry Lucious, Calvin Bruce and Edward Wash.
Flower Bearers were: Fraternal Organizations. Final Arrangements Entrusted to: Century-Hairston Funeral Home.
