Hazel Irene Armstrong, 89, Springfield, Ill. formerly of Clarence, died at her home on July 10, 2005.
She was born August 15, 1915, in Liberal, Kan., the daughter of George E. and Ruby May Higgins Browning.
She married Lyle Armstrong in Missouri Valley, Iowa on October 19, 1937. He died in 1968.
She and her husband shared in ministry together beginning in 1947 serving the Christian Church in Exline, Iowa for five years and then ministering to the First Christian Church in Clarence for 17 years. As the minister's wife, Hazel taught Sunday School classes, youth group classes, prepared children's programs for Christmas and Easter, fulfilled the position of dorm mother and nurse at church camps, in addition to being a secretary for her husband. Because of her ministry, several of the congregation's young people grew up to serve in the preaching and music ministries.
Following her husband's death while at Clarence, she set up residence in Springfield, Ill., where she continued teaching a Sunday School class. While in Springfield, she worked at AIG Insurance from which she retired, though she continued working in other capacities until the age of 78. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Elm Street Christian Church in Springfield, Ill.
Survivors include two daughters, Lyla D. Mitts and Julia (Judy) E. Witmer, both of Springfield, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Kenneth L. Armstrong in 1997; a grandson, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Clarence with Bro. Kyle Witmer officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Clarence. Visitation will precede the service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
