Winifred Hennessy was born in Ireland to John Hennessy and Mary Hayes. She married Michael Browne, a farmer, in Ireland and they had seven children. Many families left Ireland after years of failing crops, the Great Famine. Although it is not known if the Browne family were potato farmers, Michael and Winifred left Ireland for America with their surviving children in 1851. Before their departure they lost one son, Michael Jr. Their baby, also named Winifred, died on their voyage and was buried at sea. The Browne's arrived in New Orleans in October 1851 with their surviving children; Thomas, Mary Anne, Johanna, John Thomas, and Margaret.
Winifred's husband, Michael, was ill upon arrival and the family could not travel further. Michael died soon after in New Orleans leaving Winifred alone in a strange new world with their five children and very little money.
After the loss of her husband, Winifred and her children traveled to Texas to be with family of her mother. She raised her children in Houston.
