Phyllis Joan Barnes, 73, of South Sioux City died Monday, May 29, 2006, at her residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Stephen S. Niles officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Phyllis Brown was born Jan. 13, 1933, in Sioux City, the daughter of Jesse Ray and Kathryn (Deviney) Brown. She had lived her entire life in South Sioux City. She graduated from South Sioux City High School and received her clerical degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College.
She was united in marriage to Delbert Barnes, who passed away Aug. 17, 1996. She was employed with the Circle S Convenience Store as a bookkeeper for the past 23 years.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laura Chapter 301. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, including being baptized there.
She loved her family and got great joy from taking care of all of them. She enjoyed watching them grow. She also was a animal lover and enjoyed the companionship of her pets throughout the years.
In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling, skating and golfing. She was a good seamstress and was proud of the canning she did most of the summers until recently. She liked flying in airplanes and sharing stories about her childhood with her children.
Survivors include seven children, Thomas Barnes and his wife, Jeanne of Homer, Neb., Luann and her husband, Wayne Benson of South Sioux City, Cynthia Barnes of South Sioux City, Patti Barnes of Omaha, William "Bill" Barnes and his wife, Shelly of Pierce, Neb., Andrea and her husband, David Gerkin of South Sioux City and Jean and her husband, Bryan Grage of South Sioux City; 13 grandchildren, Tessa and her husband, Jeff Etherington, Anna and her husband, Patrick Reynolds, Carey Barnes, Michael Benson, Jennifer and her husband, Daniel Hanna, Raymond Barnes, Jacob Barnes, Daniel Gerkin, Sarah Gerkin, Laura Gerkin, Elizabeth Gerkin, Calvin Grage and Benjamin Grage; and seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Kathryn and Thomas Etherington, Joel Reynolds and Sophia, Jesse and Joseph Hanna.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert; and her parents.
