Hilda Bernice Brown Baker of Hagerstown, Maryland, was born November 11, 1913 near Fairfield the daughter of Lenious J. Brown (B-October 1, 1891, D-October22, 1939) of Cascade and Bernice May Carbaugh. (B-May 1, 1896 D-September 13, 1966) formerly of Iron Springs She was the wife of Charles W. Baker (B-December 2, 1910, D-January 12, 2000). She had one brother; Melvin Lenious Brown (B-August 25, 1919, D-December 26, 1985) husband of Margaret Sturdavant Brown (B-September 24, 1915).The family lived in Cascade, Maryland. Their large two story house was just outside the entrance of the Maryland TB Sanatorium. The road in front of the house led from the Sanatorium to the main intersection in Mount Alto, about 2 miles away. Lenious could walk to work just across the road. He spent most of his working life at the sanatorium as a chauffeur, truck driver and mechanic. When his son graduated from Thurmont High School in 1937 Lenious purchased an Atlantic service station on Potomac Avenue in Waynesboro for his son to operate. The son was a good mechanic and natural born salesman. The business grew and prospered to include tire sales and the used car sales. By 1954 Melvin purchased the Waynesboro Buick dealership also on Potomac Avenue followed by the American motors dealership, the Anthony Wayne Hotel, a bank and various real estate interests. The family worked as a team Melvin was the front man and salesman, Margaret was the general manager, Hilda was the office manager and Bernice watched the car lot and alerted the salesman to potential customers. Lenious Brown's $ 500 investment in the service station along with a lot of hard work provided for the lifelong financial security of the entire family. There were no grandchildren. Hilda was married three times. She married her first husband in the 1930's they lived in a white Cape Cod house on the road between Mount Alto and Cascade. Her husband died in the early 1950's. A second marriage in the earl 1960's was short lived resulting in divorce. She married Charles W. Baker, a widower, in the late 1960's they lived happily in Hagerstown until her death. She is interred at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, Maryland.
