THE PAST AND PRESENT OF KANE COUNTY ILLINOIS, published 1878. "JOHN J. BROWN. In 1835 John J. Brown left Ashtabula Co. Ohio and moved to Chicago, Illinois. In 1837 from Chicago he moved to Kane Co. Illinois where, in 1839, after working and saving money, he bought 120 acres in the town of Rutland. John returned to Ohio to visit relatives, and there married. Then with his wife he returned to his farm in Kane Co. He was a farmer. Later acquired milk cows and began diary farming. He continued to buy land in Kane Co. Illinois, and by 1878 owned 400 acres, valued at $25,000. While living in Kane Co. John Brown was postmaster for six years, Justice of the Peace for seven years and a School Trustee for nine years. In 1878 he retired from farming, put the farm up for sale "at the low price of $45 per acre, part cash, the balance to suit purchaser, long time given at 7 per cent interest.""

THE KINSLEY GRAPHIC, Kinsley Kansas, 8 February 1883, p. 3, column 2, DIED.—On the South side on Monday night, of consumption, J. J. Brown, aged about 66 years. The deceased was an old resident of this county, and was esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at the Ostrander schoolhouse yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
