Bettie L. Brown Abbott, 80, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2011. She was born May 10, 1930 in Pittsylvania County to Joseph and Rowena Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Abbott Jr., her parents, three siblings and one stepdaughter. Bettie grew up and was educated in Pittsylvania County. She later moved to Roanoke where she met and married Charles Abbott Jr. She was a faithful wife until his death in 1977. Bettie was a dedicated employee of National Business College for 30 years. She was a caregiver to many family members during their illnesses. She was a faithful member of Bibleway Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ where she seldom missed Sunday School and Sunday services. She served many years on the Senior Usher Board. Bettie loved to to shop and could be seen at anytime at the local malls and stores or sitting on her front porch. She also loved trips to the country to visit family and friends. Those left to cherish the memories are her loving godson, Marvin (Lynne) Croner; devoted niece, Hazel Williams, both of Roanoke; six stepchildren, Deborah Charlene Phillips, of Brown Summit, N.C., Sherry (Thomas) Hilton, of Landover, Md., Wanda Roberts, of District Heights, Md., Bridgette Abbott, of Brown Summit, N.C., Charles Abbott III, of Laurel, Md. and Marjorie (Len) Wickliffe, of Flint, Mich.; three sisters, Emma Hodnette, Viola Berger and Virginia (Jean) Witcher; two brothers, Walter Brown, all of Chatham, and John (Doll Ann) Brown, of Axton; and a host of nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held noon Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Bibleway Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ with the Bishop Joe Adkins officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral services. Friends may call on Monday afternoon for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Published in Roanoke Times on March 6, 2011
