Elderly Pennellyille Man Fatally Injured

A 93 year-old Pennellville man became the county's 14th traffic fatality when he was struck and killed while walking on the Oneida River Rd. in the Town of Schroeppel.

Pronounced dead at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse of head injuries at 1:35 p. m. Tuesday was David R. Brown, 93, of RD 1 Oneida, Kiver Rd., Pennellville He had been struck by a car operated by Timothy H. Shoecraft 23, of RD 1, Oneida River Rd Pennellville at 11 a. m. the same day.

According to the report, Shoecraft was backing his vehicle out a driveway onto the Oneida River Rd. and did not see anyone behind him. He stated that he heard a thud and then the left rear portion of the car raised up. He opened the door, saw a jacket and realized that he had hit someone.

The Phoenix ambulance transported the Brown man to the Syracuse hospital where he later died.

Deputy Robert Hall of the Sheriff's Department investigated the accident with assistance from Phoenix Police Chief Charles Mover.

Born in Cato, Mr. Brown had lived in Auburn, and resided at his Phoenix home for three years. He was a retired fanner and machinist. His wife, Mrs. Mable Joyce Brown, died in 1960. He was a member of the Auburn Senior Citizens Club and of Ira United Methodist Churcn.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Helen Timmerson of Syracuse, Mrs. Arthur Clark of Pulaski, and Mrs. Raymond Erickson of Pennellville; seven grand-children; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Allason-Glanville- Tappan Funeral Home, 919 Main St., Phoenix with the Rev. John Crandall Redfield of the Wesleyen Church officiating.

Burial will be in Weedsport Rural Cemetery, Weedsport. Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
