Martha E Brewster married Oliver Brown, son of John Brown the Abolitionist, on 7 APR 1858 in North Elba, NY. In 1859 Martha, aged 17, and her sister-in-law Annie Brown, aged 15, acted as housekeepers at the Kennedy Farm in Maryland where John Brown and his men lived while preparing for the Harper's Ferry Raid.

The Brown household upon hearing of the failure of the raid, took to bed sick, leaving a pregnant 17 year old Martha to care for the house, the farm and the family. Four months after learning about her husbands death during the raid, Martha took to bed ill. She gave birth to a premature girl, named Olive in honor of Martha's fallen husband. Olive died soon after birth, and Martha followed her a few days later.
