My family was always told John Brown was born in England, but 1850 and 1860 US Censuses for Wayne Co. indicate that his birthplace was Rhode Island. As a young man he was a sailer and crossed the Atlantic several times. He married Mary who died before the civil war. When his son in law William Mayberry joined the union army he lived with his daughter Elizabeth Brown Mayberry.

In later life John Brown was a shoemaker. He tanned the hides and made the shoes by hand sewing with a waxed thread. He made the wax from tree sap. He pretended to blow his nose and spit in the wax to keep his grandchildren from chewing it.
