Archilles Morris Brown was born Dec 26, 1828 in Henry County, Indiana., the son of William and Sarah Martindale Brown. He married Anna Gilmore Dec 27, 1854 in Rush County, Indiana. He was mustered in as an orderly Sergeant in Company D, 98th Illinois Mounted Infantry in the Civil War and became a member of Wilder's Lightning Brigade. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant and fought at Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga and Farmington. He resigned March 22, 1864. His letter of resignation states: "I am a man of a family of small children of females. I am the only male person connected with the family to attend to the business affairs of both said families, one of my brother-in-laws having been killed at the Battle of Stone River and the other being now a member of the 22nd Indiana Battery". Archilles and Anna had four children: William Seward Brown, Mary E Brown, Sarah Brown, and James Gilmore Brown. Archilles died in 1911.
