Mrs. Julia R. Brown, born June 19, 1888, age 96, passed away on Monday, April 22, 1985, in Winter Park, Florida.

She was the daughter of R.C. and Alice Rhea and was born on a farm five and one-half miles northeast of Chester.

She graduated from Chester High School when there were only 10 grades, in 1905. The first year there was a 12th grade graduation in 1911, she also was in that class, having gone to Nebraska Wesleyan Univ. to get her 11th grade.

Julia was a member of the Chester United Methodist Church for 84 1/2 years and served as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service for two years. She was faithful and active in the church activities all the years she lived in Chester. The words "faithful" and "active" characterize her life.

The marriage of Julia Rhea and Elbert Brown, on December 28, 1911, was the first to be held in the new Chester Methodist Church. To this union were born three children, Harold E. Brown, now of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Wilbert R. Brown, now of El Toro, California, and Marian deGuehery, of Winter Park, Florida.

Julia helped her husband by working at the Chester telephone office, which he established; also at the Brown Grain and Lumber office. she worked alongside her brother, William Rhea when he was postmaster in Chester and she joined in the defense effort during World War II. She was active in the Woman's Club and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having joined the Hubbell chapter on September 1, 1914 and transferring to Chester Chapter No. 289 in 1922.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William C. Rhea and her husband. Her survivors, beside the three children, include a sister, Mrs. C.F. Connell (Alva) of Orlando, Florida; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

After the death of her husband in 1955 Julia moved to Florida.

Memorial services were held in Orlando, Florida on April 25, 1985 with Dr. Herb Hester of Killarney Baptist Church officiating.

Memorial services were held in the Chester United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 26, 1985 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Jean T. Samuelson and the Rev. Opal L. Crounse, officiated. Burial was in the Chester Cemetery.

Julia was faithful in guidance and support of her children, and in later years, of her seven grandchildren.

"Her high Christian standards never wavered, and it is in this area that her family will remember her most surely. One hardly needed to ask what she thought about a problem; he almost knew what she would say. Her spirit will live on with each one."
