Elbert L. Brown was born at Waukeegan, Ill., March 26, 1880, and passed away October 2, 1955 at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 6 days.
He came to Chester, Nebraska with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Brown in 1881.
He attended the Nebraska Wesleyan University and the State University, leaving the university in his junior year to help his father install Chesters (sic) first telephone exchange. He was the first president of the Meridian hi-way now known as No. 81. In 1934 he was president of the Nebraska Lumber Dealers Ass'n.
For several years he traveled for the Kinkaid and Von Steen Lumber firms.
On December 28, 1911 he was united in marriage to Julia Rhea. To this union four children were born. Robert Rhea died in infancy. Harold E. lives in Schenectady, N.Y., Wilbert R. in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey and Marion deGuehery in Winter Park, Florida.
For many years Bert, as everyone knew him, was manager of the Brown Lumber Co. He served on the school board, was a member of the Methodist Church where he served as trustee, steward and lay leader. He was also a member of Chester lodge A.F. & A.M. 298 for 46 years and served as secretary for 13 years.
In 1948 he retired from active business.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife, his three children and seven grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Hazel Spurling of Seattle, Wash., a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mortimer J. Brown of Niagara Falls, New York, and many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, October 4, at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church with Rev. Norman Smitheram officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. F.C. Duey, Mrs. L.W.Eickman, Dr. D.B. Mullikin and G.D. Van Cleef. Mrs. F.C. Haifleigh accompanied the singers and Mrs. Robert Weary was organist. Pallbearers were W.C. Throne, Frank Larkins, D.A. Cramer, L.W. Eickman, J.E. Woodward and Art Woodward. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery.
