Former Alaska resident Jackie Mae Brown, 88, died Jan. 12 at a hospital in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Services were held at the Los Osos Valley Mortuary chapel in California with burial in Los Osos Valley Memorial Park.

Ms. Brown was born Nov. 16, 1905, in Redrock, Texas, and raised in Rosanky, Texas. She moved to San Antonio, Texas, and married in 1929. In 1931, she and her husband moved to California, settling in Morro Bay. In 1944, they purchased the Morro Beach Inn which they operated until 1952. Ms. Brown then moved to Alaska, where she worked as a civil servant for the quartermaster laundry at Fort Richardson. She retired as a supervisor in 1971. Ms. Brown returned to California in 1979, settling in Grover City. In 1983, she moved to Atascadero, Calif., and enjoyed traveling. Ms. Brown was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bodean and Bob Andersen of Kimberly, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, Boyd and Novella of Gold River, Calif.; stepmother, Emma Smith of Texas; brothers, Edward Smith and James Smith of Texas; sisters, "Tiny" Fredrick, Lois Smith, and Della Seidel, all of Texas, Dorothy Artigue of New Orleans, and Sybil Allen of Bakersfield, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.
