Death of James Brown

At 2:30 on Thursday morning, Sept. 6, 1888, the spirit of our fellow townsman, James Brown, took its flight to the other world. Mr. Brown was 65 years of age, and had been a resident of Fort Smith almost continuously since 1870. He was a native of Tennessee, but spent a portion of his life in Alabama and Mississippi, having been married at Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1849, to Miss Mary Brown, who survives him. He also leaves four children and four grand children to mourn his loss, his eldest daughter being the wife of Mr. O. D. Weldon, of the ELEVATOR. He has for years been a devout member of the Baptist church, and died in that faith, sincere in his conviction that he was fully prepared to meet his Maker. Thus has passed away an exemplary citizen, a devoted husband, and indulgent father, whose works on earth will continue to live after him.

His funeral will take place today at 10 a.m., Rev. A. J. Kinkead, officiating.

Peace to his ashes.

Children of James and Mary Jane Brown were: Virginia Elizabeth (1850-1880), Missouri D. (1853-1891), Clinton Pierce (1862-1937)#67519880, Florence Gertrude (1865-1901) and Edna Earle #39062338(1868-1946).
