Phyllis Lynette Allen was born to Thereon and Berte (Purciful) Brown. As a child, she was active in ballet and tap. She also modeled bathing suits for Jantzen. She married her high school sweetheart, Donald Ray Allen, Sept. 24, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was a wife and homemaker. Phyllis graduated from the Portland Art Museum and taught painting in the 1960s. She was also an avid gardener, bowler, skier and tennis player. Phyllis and Donn owned bowling centers; the first being Parkrose Lanes in 1948, and in 1955 they bought Interstate Bowl. After selling both of them, they built Interstate Lanes in 1962. In 1987 they purchased Allen's Crosley Lanes. Survivors include her son, Donald D. (Rachael) Allen; daughter, Suzanne Farrell; grandchildren, Jeffrey Allen Farrell, Bryan Michael Farrell, Donald Scott Allen and Amanda Rae Allen; and great-grandson, Kyron Alan Carlson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donn; and daughter, Merlynn L. Thompson. Phyllis passed away at age 85 in Vancouver, Wash. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, at Willamette National Cemetery.
