JAMES BROWN
★✯★ Patriot, Revolutionary War ★✯★

James Brown was born in Ireland (or possibly England) in 1742 to James and Grazilla (Grizilla, Grazella or possibly Gizelle) Brown. It is believed he came to America after 1760. He served in the Revolutionary War (I'm currently researching all the claims of his military history.)

James' father, James Brown, was the son of James Brown who died around 1690/1691 while fighting in the Battle of Boyne in Ireland.

James married Mary. At this point, I've not confirmed what her last name is. On some documents it's listed as Mead, Meech, etc., and on others it's listed as Eaton; and yet, on others it is listed as Mead Eaton. James and Mary had at lease three children:

- Rebecca Brown
- James Brown, Jr., died around 1826.
- Robert Brown
(Information will be added as it becomes available.)

I had received a suggested edit from Bonnie (see notes) to add a death date, but I didn't want to add it until I could confirm it. Which I did. In a SARs application in May 1900, the applicant has a transcription of James' original headstone. It reads:

"In memory of James Brown, Sr. who departed this life Nov. 6, 1830, aged 88 years.

As a soldier he fought amid cannon's loud roar
As a Christian he sought to gain that blessed shore.
And ever in glory doth raise
The song of pure devotion through Jesus' grace."

A clipping of this inscription has been posted in the photo section.

Bonnie also sent a suggested to change his death location from Lancaster County, PA to Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. Again, I didn't want to make this change without first confirming it. Confirmation can be found in a newspaper extract from 25 November 1830, from the Rhode Island, US Vital Extracts, 1636-1899, Marriages, Deaths, Vol. 20. A clipping of James' death notice is included in the photo section.

And Bonnie's suggestion to add the birth date of 2 February 1742 had to be confirmed. I have long seen his birth listed as 6 March 1742 or 2 February 1742. Before receiving Bonnie's edits I had ordered the book, "Burials in the Kittanning Cemetery, 1811-1995" by Allen and Marla Melching, and it did confirm his birth date.

Unfortunately, the Kittanning Burial book raises further questions. The information, according to the authors, was taken from the cemetery burial cards, tombstones readings, obituaries, court records, biographical histories and other genealogical records. They state, "Even though we have carefully examined each bit of information and made every attempt to be as accurate as possible, we know errors will be found."

The book states that James Brown, Jr.'s parents were James Brown, Sr. and Grazilla Kennedy. It states that James Brown, Sr.'s parents were John Brown and Margaret Eaton. The dates don't add up with James, Jr. because from what is well known on the internet, Grazilla died around 1744, 36 years before James' birth. More research is required to clear up James, Sr.'s parents as being John and Margaret.

This memorial is updated frequently and I try to post accurate and sourced information.

─══ Notes ══─
● A soldier of the American Revolution. DAR Ancestor #A015515, he has 21 pages of documentation on Fold3. Within the documentation it lists his wife as being Mary, he has a son named Robert and a son named James and an unnamed daughter. There is a letter from a Mrs. Ingram where she refers to this James Brown as being commissioned as Captain. But his records do not support it. Instead, it lists him as a Private and Non Commissioned Officer, his own words.
● The DAR Ancestor who is listed as a Captain (Ancestor #: A015513) will need to be proven again. The DAR states that the documentation which was previously provided does not meet current DAR standards. There are no records on Fold3 to confirm any James Brown from Pennsylvania was a Captain.
● Thanks to Bonnie Martin Cornish for the suggested edits (birth location, birth date, death date, death location).
● There are other documents which state he was born in England instead of Ireland.
● I think the child which is attached, Elizabeth Ensley, was attached by mistake.
