Birth: Aug. 15, 1833, Netherlands
Death: Apr. 3, 1919
Mille Lacs County
Minnesota, USA

Mrs. Sophia Emily Bockoven died
on April 3 at her home northeast of
Princeton and at the time of her death
was 86 years, 7 months and 19 days
of age. She was one of the pioneer
settlers of this part of the country
and in the early days endured many
hardships and privations. In those
days this territory was a veritable
wilderness overrun by Indians, who
were a menace to the few settlers who
were here.

Funeral services were conducted by
Rev Geer on Tuesday morning at the
Methodist church in Princeton town-
ship. The choir rendered three hymns
and the floral tributes were numerous
and beautiful. Many people attended
the service and followed the remains
to their last resting place.

Mrs. Bockoven, whose maiden name
was Sophia Emily Brooks, was born
in Holland, August 15, 1833. She
came to America with her father and
4 brothers in 1845, her mother having
died crossing the ocean. They settled
in Pennsylvania. In 1849 she was
married to George H. Bockoven, and
in 1854 they came to St. Paul. Later
they moved onto a homestead northeast
of Princeton, where she lived until
the time of her death. Her husband
died in the fall of 1881. She is sur-
vived by two daughters, Mrs. H. C.
Harrington, Princeton, and Mrs. Wm.
Sams, Skamania, Wash.; five sons,
Henry, Freeland, Lafayette, Leonard
and Lesley, all of Princeton. She also
leaves 30 grandchildren, 34 great
grandchildren, and one brother, Albert
J. Brooks, who lives with his daughter,
Mrs. Wm. Stubbs, in Dalbo.

Mrs Bockoven was a kind, motherly
old lady who was held in high esteem
by everyone who knew her. She was
a christian in the true sense of the
word, a loving wife and mother, a good
neighbor, -and was charitable to a
fault. Many are those who will hold
her memory in reverence.

The family sincerely thanks
the friends who so kindly assisted them
andioffered words of sympathy in their
