On March 14, 2011, Martha Brooks Bagby Mims, 78, passed away after a long illness of COPD.

She was born in Zebulon in 1932, to Edgar Barnard Brooks and Geraldine English Kelly.

Martha was the oldest of three girls. Her sisters are Virginia Pennington of Tifton and Gloria Short of Macon. She graduated from South Georgia College and Tift College. She married Lt. Cmdr. Hallam Overby Bagby in June 1953. The couple moved to St. Simons Island in Sept.1962 and raised three children Hallam Overby Bagby Jr. (Buster) and Andrew Brooks Bagby, both of Brunswick, and Lisa Bagby Lawson of New Milford, Conn.

Martha was very active in the community, volunteering in the schools, Sunday Shool teacher at First Baptist Church, helping and running VBSs, working with the teens and working as church secretary for many, many years. She was secretary at several other churches as well. She was an awesome cook and played the piano beautifully.

In January 1982, she married her present husband, Joseph A. Mims of Warner Robins. They were married 29 years and enjoyed travelling and dining out. Joseph has four daughters, Patricia Baker, Karen Crawford, Sharon Nutgrass and Christy Norman, all of Warner Robins.

Martha has three grandchildren, Brooks L. Bagby of Brunswick and Jennifer A. Lawson and Benjamin A Lawson, both of New Milford. She also has one brother-in-law, Norman (Rocky) Short; one son-in-law, David A. Lawson; and one daughter-in-law, Tammy C. Bagby.

She was predeceased by her parents; a brother-in-law, Floyd Pennington; and one grandchild, Barry A. Bagby. She has many nieces, nephews and step grandchildren.
Martha loved the colors white and pink. She also loved catalog and TV shopping.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
A celebration of life service will be at noon Friday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Please join us at the home of Charles and Jan Barry, 523 Old Mission Road, Brunswick. (Turn left directly in front of Brunswick Country Club onto Crossbrook. At the stop sign, turn right onto Paradise Marsh Circle. Take the first right on Indian Mound Road, which becomes Plantation Road. Turn right onto Old Mission Road.)
