RECENT DEATHS.
Brooks.
Dr. Samuel T. Brooks died at his home on Main street Wednesday
morning. Dr. Brooks was born in Stansted,P. Q , on Dec. 28, 1823.
In early life his parents removed to Sherbrooke.
He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1847 and from the
Medical department of McGill College, Montreal in 1851. For the
next 11 years he practiced medicine in Sherbrooke,
removing to St. Johnsbury in 1862.
On June 6, 1855, he married Miss Lucy Mills.daughter of the late
Jonas Mills of Colebrook, N. H., who still survives him. Nine children
were born to them, two of them, Samuel and Walter, dying in infancy.
The children living are Lyman H., of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mrs. William
C. Tyler, of St. Johnsbury; Arthur R. of Olcott, Alfred H. of Minneapolis,
Mrs. J. M. Jenckes of Sherbrooke, Frank H. and Jonas H., both of St.
Johnsbury.
Dr. Brooks was one of the oldest physicians in service in this town
and his practice was not confined by any means to the limits of St.
Johnsbury. He was frequently called elsewhere to take cases and
was relied upon by physicians here and in other towns in consultations.
He was conservative rather than hasty in his decisions and was an
indefatigable worker. He kept posted on all the modern discoveries
in medicine and surgery and was an active and honored member
of the Vermont Medical society. He has been vice-president and
Inter president of this society and was at one time councilor in the
same body. He always attended the annual meetings if possible and
frequently gave a paper.
During a residence of over a quarter of a century in this town
his arduous professional duties never hindered him in his work
in the church. He has been an active member of the North
church since he first came to town and was deacon there for
about 25 years. No one was more constant than he at both the
church services on Sunday and at the weekly prayer meeting,
and at the latter place he was always ready to help the leader.
Though never holding any public office he was intensely
interested in the political welfare of this country, and was equally
interested in the proper administration of town and village affairs.
Dr. Brooks had been in failing health for about two years, caused
no doubt by excessive work in the early years of his profession.
He has been gradually failing the past month and death came to
him peacefully and calmly. The cause of his death was a general
breaking down of the entire system, the end coming when the
disease reached the brain.
The funeral will be held at his late residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
