Birth: Jul. 8, 1824
Derbyshire, England
Death: Dec. 11, 1905
Pleasant Lake
Steuben County
Indiana, USA

George Brooks was born in Derbyshire, England, July 8, 1824, and died at the farm home of his son Ernest, east of Pleasant Lake in Steuben township, Steuben county, Ind., Dec. 11, 1905, aged 81 years, 5 months and 3 days.

His parents, George and Elizabeth Brooks, came to America in 1830 and located in Ontario county, New York. In the spring of 1837, George Jr., accompanied the Powers families in their removal from Ontario county to York township, Steuben county, Ind. They reached their destination July 8, George's thirteenth birthday. At that time the family of Fayette Barron, living in a cabin on land now in the village of Metz, was the only white family in York township. His parents removed from New York to Indiana the following year, locating in the Powers Settlement, and there he grew to manhood.

December 5, 1847, George Brooks and Jane Burk were united in marriage. They began their married life on a piece of wild land in York township, which, in due time, by diligent and patient toil was developed into a farm. There they lived till after the war, when they removed to a farm about a mile and a half east of Pleasant Lake, where the remainder of their lives was spent. Mrs. Brooks died about five years ago; and after that Mr. Brooks made his home with his sons, George and Ernest, in Pleasant Lake, and on the old farm homestead, where his death occurred early last Monday morning from heart failure.

Mr. Brooks was quiet and unassuming, but his sturdy honesty and many other characteristics which constitute good citizenship, commanded the good will and respect of all his acquaintances. One daughter, Mrs. Cornelia Ireland, of Angola, two sons, George and Ernest Brooks of Pleasant Lake, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, also, two brothers Samuel Brooks of Angola, and Robert Brooks living near Coldwater, survive him. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Roberts, pastor of the Pleasant Lake Baptist church, took place at the old homestead Wednesday forenoon with a larger concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends in attendance. The burial was in the family lot in the Powers Cemetery in York Township.
