From Vaughan's Funeral Home (Boerne, TX):
Barbara Anne Collier Brooks, Born January 11, 1931 in Chattanooga, TN. Barbara was convinced all of her life that God placed her 17 months later in the loving arms of James H. and Alma N. Collier as well as two loving families, the Colliers and Uptons of Madisonville, TN. She attended Madisonville schools and ranked second in her High School graduation class in 1948. She attended the University of Tennessee, graduated from Hiwassee Junior College in her home town, and then attended Carson Newman College, graduating from there in 1952. She worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratories until she committed her life to full-time Christian Service and enrolled in Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, graduating from there in 1957. She then became youth director at the First Baptist Church in Tallahassee, FL. Faced with the necessity of paying seminary bills on a small salary she decided to move back in her parents house and teach in her home county to pay the bills. On a visit home she met the young man who would be her husband, Harley Brooks, who was the librarian at Hiwassee College. When she moved back they dated until their marriage on August 21, 1959. This was not a denial of her earlier call, just a move to a different way of expressing her call. She was active in working with woman's groups, young girls groups, and Sunday School teaching in every church she and her husband attended. The day after their wedding the couple moved to Albuquerque, NM and the University of New Mexico Library and Bernalillo County Schools. In 1961 they moved to Chicago to the University of Chicago, and Dalton, IL schools while Harley finished course work and then assumed a position in the library. In 1964 after being told that they probably could not have children God gave them a precious gift, Amy Catherine Brooks (now Schuhmacher) a beautiful six months old baby girl just before they left for Harley to work at Ohio State University. In Columbus in defiance of doctors expectations Barbara gave birth to another precious girl, Emily Collier Brooks (now smith). In 1968 they moved to Nashville, TN where Harley became Librarian at George Peabody College, now a part of Vanderbilt University. There Barbara gave birth to a precious boy, Harley Calvin Brooks, III. They stayed in Nashville for 20 years after that. In 1972 Harley left practicing academic librarianship to become an educational sales representative for Grolier Educational Corporation, a change that placed greater responsibility on Barbara for raising the children, a responsibility that she carried through some times that were not good economically. In 1987 Harley moved back to academia at Western Kentucky University and then in 1989 to Auburn University where he retired in 2001. Upon retirement they originally planned to move back to Albuquerque where their married life began but their children insisted that they move close to one child. After moving to Fort Worth in 2002 they moved to Boerne in 2005 to be close to Amy and her family until her death on July 25, 2009. The Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2009 from 6:00 pm till 8 pm at Vaughan's Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church of Boerne. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
