Charles "Chuck" Philip Broghammer was born to Dr. Francis J. and Margaret (Leahy) Broghammer on April 29, 1926, in Superior, Wisconsin. He graduated from West Union High School in 1944. Following high school, Chuck proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Medic. After serving in the navy, Chuck attended St. Louis University. He returned to West Union to work on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Marion Deeny on October 12, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma, Iowa. Soon after he begin his career in plumbing and heating, first working for Johnson-Bierman and later for Gage & Gage, both in West Union.
He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, serving as caretaker of the cemetery, Mt. Calvary. He was the first Grand Knight of the St. Thomas Council of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Davis Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He belonged to the West Union American Legion and VFW. He volunteered his time from 1953-2004 on the West Union Fire Department, including serving as the chief from 1983 until his retirement. He belonged to Iowa Fireman's Association and was a lifetime member of the Iowa Fire Chief's Association.
Chuck enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Chuck received the following awards: Governor's Award for Certificate of Merit 1994; Roger Mooty Memorial Fire Chief's Association Award 1995; West Union Citizen of the Year 2002, Governor's Award for Firefighter of Year 2003.
He passed away on May 16, 2013, in his home in West Union where he resided for the last 80 years.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Marion of West Union; six children, Bernardine (Greg) Bordignon of Robins, Iowa, Janice (Gary) Rosauer of Gilbertville, Iowa, Joyce (Mike) Friederich of Elgin, Iowa, Bill (Lori) Broghammer, of Charles City, Iowa, Louise (Sam) Basile of Rockford, Illinois, and Theresa Broghammer of Marion, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Natalie and Lynette Bordignon, Lisa (Dan) Jones, Amy (Andy) Krenz, Joe and Nick Rosauer, Amanda (Luke) Nims, Ryan (Holly) Friederich, Tyler and Taylor Ishman, Emily and Patricia Basile; 5 great-grandchildren, Grayson and Olivia Nims, Tate and Payten Friederich and Alexis Jones; his twin sister, Carolyn Leehy and sister, Mary Margaret (Phil) Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Anna Louise.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 10:30 am at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa. A visitation will be held at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
A public visitation will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, from 3 pm until 8 pm at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home with a rosary service at 3 pm. A scripture service will begin at 6:30 pm and the family invites friends and family to share stories following the service.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be dispersed between the West Union Fire Department and Mount Calvary Cemetery Chapel for renovations.
